God is Great...People are Crazy

"God is great,
Beer is good,
People are crazy!"

While traveling almost 2000 miles last week, there is no telling how many times we heard this song played on the radio; it was the number two song of the week. I did not listened to the words or the story of the song until Rick pointed it out. It was a cute song after I realized the story that went with this chorus.
I will only comment on the two lines that I have some knowledge about - lines 1 and 3. I totally agree with the old man that "God is great." Each day I am more amazed with Him and His attributes. The more personal my relationship is with God, the greater He becomes. Now for the other line, "people are crazy," this one is not as black and white. I can say that I personally am getting a little crazier each year, but I have deserved the right to be crazy. This reminded me of a poem that one of my students read for UIL back when I was a sponsor/coach for poetry interpretation.

When I am Old I Will Wear Purple

When I am Old
I will wear Purple!

When I am an old woman,
I shall wear purple - -
With a red hat which doesn't go,
and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension
on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandles,
And say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
and gobble up samples in shops
and press alarm bells
and run with my stick along public railings,
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit!
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at ago,
or only bread and pickles for a week,
and hoard pens and pencils
and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
and pay our rent
and not swear in the street,
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner
and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised
when suddenly I am old,
And start to wear purple!

--Jenny Joseph
Friends and relatives that know me well may think that I fall into the later category or that I am practicing way too much. Whichever it is - so far the fifties have treated me well, and God is even greater!

  1. Well you've worn purple ever since I can remember, so does this mean you've been crazy all my life?
